CHAPTER THIRTEEN:

Costumes & Alibis

It wasn't until afternoon that Ethan finally awoke and came down from his room. He found both Grady and Benny in the study. Grady was at his desk, staring at his laptop and absentmindedly rubbing his right temple as he immersed himself in reading, while Benny sat on the lounge sofa, where serious discussions had occurred the night before, sewing some fashion of tiny fabric pieces.

"What are you up to?", Ethan wondered, joining Benny on the couch. Benny held up his project with self-satisfaction. It was a tiny green costume that would only be big enough to fit a small dog.

"It's for the Halloween party!", Benny grinned. "I'm going as the Incredible Hulk! I figure I have a few things in common with him."

"Oh yeah.", Ethan said, realizing a couple of things at once. "You'll be a chihuahua at the party. Well, I think the Hulk is a great choice. Nice handiwork. I guess I need to throw something together. I hadn't even thought about a costume yet. I've had too much going on."

"Well, we're closed since it's Devil's Night. You could run to a Halloween store and grab something.", Benny offered. "I just like making my own. There's not many human things I'm good at but crafts seem to be one of them."

Ethan looked to Grady, "We're closed tonight? But isn't Devil's Night supposed to be a night of mischief? Wouldn't things be super busy?"

Grady looked up from his computer, "That's a misnomer. Devil's Night has nothing to do with monsters. It's a night generally for human mischief, so if there are any problems then that's for the police to contend with. It came into existence in the 1930's precisely because of the actions of human youth during that time. For the supernatural it's a dead night. Pun entirely intended."

"We're all too busy planning for the real night!", Benny interjected. "All Hallows Eve! Samhain!"

"Costume parties.", Ethan smiled.

"Costume parties!", Benny cheered.

"What does a ghost wear to a costume party?", Ethan wondered aloud. "Do monsters get offended if you dress up as them?"

"Do monsters get offended?", Grady snorted. "Listen to yourself. What a silly sentiment. No, I should guess monsters don't take offense to much."

"Alright, then.", Ethan decided. "I'll try to go find something to wear later. Which I will segue into another question. When do we get paid? Or, do we get paid?"

Grady frowned at Benny, "You didn't give it to him?"

"Oops!", Benny blushed and quickly reached into his back pocket, pulling out his wallet. He took out a credit card and handed it over to Ethan.

"I was supposed to give this to you when I trained you your first day.", Benny said. "Totally slipped my mind what with all the getting to know you and cleaning up the graveyard dirt and stuff."

"Graveyard dirt?", Grady elevated a perplexed eyebrow.

Benny's eyes grew wide as he realized he'd just told on himself. He started laughing nervously, "Graveyard dirt? What are you talking about? No one said anything about any graveyard dirt, you silly moose.
